Parent Involvement Policy

South Smithfield Elementary, in cooperation with home and community, will foster a quality education for all children .  The following strategies will be used in establishing parent involvement programs at South Smithfield Elementary School:
1. South Smithfield Elementary Parent Involvement Team members are as follows:
· Principal
· Assistant Principal
· Office Staff Representative
· Teacher Assistant Representative
· Curriculum Coordinators
· Support Staff Representative
· Exceptional Children's Team Representative
· Kindergarten Representative
· First Grade Representative
· Second Grade Representative
· Third Grade Representative
· Fourth Grade Representative
· Fifth Grade Representative
· PTA Representative
· Advisory Council Representative

The South Smithfield Elementary Parent Involvement Team will meet at least twice a year for the purpose of reviewing and amending the content and effectiveness of this policy, developing the parental involvement plan, and designing strategies for more effective parental involvement.  Bylaws for the team will be established at the first Parent Involvement Team meeting.

2. South Smithfield Elementary personnel will utilize effective ways to involve parents in activities to improve student academic achievement and school performance.

3. Communication will be provided to parents by both the system and school in a manner that the parent understands.  At South Smithfield Elementary the following methods are utilized:  parent-teacher conferences; student work folders; parent training / information sessions; letters (English / Spanish); bilingual receptionist; PTA meetings; progress reports and report cards; school district / school web pages; school notes; school marquee; invitational flyers / reminders of events (English and Spanish); student / parent handbook; and a Quick Reference Guide.

4. South Smithfield Elementary will conduct an annual meeting for the purpose of informing parents of the use of Title I funds, the requirements of the Title I program, and the right of parents to be involved in their child's education and requesting input and involvement of fund use, instruction, curriculum, and learning environment.

5. South Smithfield Elementary will have a parent representative on its School Improvement Team and all other appropriate councils and committees relating to the function of the school.  South Smithfield Elementary will make every effort to have parent representation consistent with the school's demographic make-up.  South Smithfield Elementary will provide flexible and organized opportunities to involve parents in the design, implementation, and evaluation of the school's program, Parent Involvement Policy, and School Improvement Plan.

6. South Smithfield Elementary will develop procedures for parent involvement that is agreed upon by parents.  These procedures will be a part of the School Improvement Plan and will be presented for the approval to the Johnston County Board of Education in the fall of each year.
